Frequently Asked Permanent Make Up Questions

What is permanent make up?

Permanent make-up is the process of implanting hypo allergenic pigment into the dermal layer of the skin. This pigment will, after a healing process, stay in the skin for a number of years. It will break down and fade with time, dependent on the patients age;  skin type and lifestyle.

We call this permanent make-up,  semi permanent make-up, cosmetic tattooing or micro pigmentation.

What do I need to do, or not do, prior to my appointment?

Please do not take any ibuprofen or aspirin or alcohol within 72 hours of your appointment if possible, this will increase the likelihood of you bleeding and result in poor pigment retention.
Please remove any false lashes before attending your eyeliner appointment, or your treatment will not go ahead and your deposit will not be refunded.
Please let Tarryn know if you are taking any medications as some may preclude you from having a treatment, or require written consent from your GP.

What will my aftercare be?

Please read the instructions thoroughly, and refer to them during your healing process, and prior to your touch up appointment. Make sure you follow the instructions carefully to ensure the best possible result for your permanent make up procedure.

How long will my permanent make up last?

There is no way to determine before hand exactly how long your colour will remain visible. It depends on your individual skin type, lifestyle, colour choice, medication levels and general health as well as sunbathing and skin routine. The majority of people find that the treatment lasts from 1 to 3 years.
Previous make-up techniques have lasted up to 5 years, but the results were heavily applied make-up. We now find clients want a more natural result and this shortens the life expectancy of the colour. For the best results to keep your make-up looking amazing we recommend a yearly touch-up/colour boost is advised.

How long will my appointment be?

Your first visit will be around 1.5 hours. A second visit or annual re touch is around 30 – 45 minutes.

How soon after botox or filler can I have a treatment?

You will need to wait at least 21 days after botox or filler before having a treatment. Please note that having botox or filler will alter the shape and symmetry of your treatment. Lip filler also reduces the amount of pigment retention.

Can I wear make up afterwards?

You should not apply make up directly to the treated area for 24 hours. Thereafter minimal make up can be used if necessary. It is not advisable to use mascara for a week, if you have had your eyeliner done.

Can permanent make up be removed?

In some cases it can be, but not always. It depends on the location of the pigment and the condition of the pigment and skin.

Can I have my lips done if I have cold sores?

If you are having a lip treatment and you suffer from cold sores you MUST take Zovirax/Aciclover tablets 5 days before and 5 days after your treatment.

Can I leave my false lashes on?

Your eyeliner cannot be done if you have false lashes on. They must be removed prior to treatment. You must then wait 2 weeks before getting your lashes done again.

What will happen on the day of my appointment?

Your treatment will begin with a thorough consultation, during which we will discuss exactly what you would like from your treatment. Your skin tone and type will then be analysed, and Tarryn will mix a colour specifically suited to your skin tone and hair colour. Facial symmetry will then be addressed and a shape will be designed to enhance and compliment your features.
When you are happy with your shape, colour and placement, the treatment will go ahead.

Do I need a patch test for allergy prior to treatment?

A patch test can be done 12 to 24 hrs before your treatment. This will not however, guarantee that you will not have a reaction to the pigment at any time the future.

How many sessions are required?

We advise our clients that 2 sessions are usually required to complete their treatment. Some of the more dramatic treatments such a full lip colour or 2 colour eye liner or thick latino eyeliner may need a 3rd and even 4th session. Some skins to do not retain pigment well and in such cases 3 or 4 sessions are needed.

How long do you allow between treatments?

A minimum of 4 weeks is allowed before treating the skin again. We advise you to wait 4-6 weeks before returning for another treatment. If you have any medical concerns that would effect the healing process, it would be better to wait 6-8 weeks before treating again.

How permanent is permanent make up?

The degree of colour permanency varies with each individual. The shade or tone of the pigment used will alter gradually over several months. It will lighten and alter in hue. No pigments implanted into the skin will remain the same colour indefinitely. You will need to maintain your permanent make up with regular top ups.

How long will the finished result last?

Permanent make-up is not a one off treatment, it always requires annual maintenance. It is recommend that you return to us for a “top up” procedure every 6 – 12 months. This will keep your make up looking as it should, and prevent any unwanted hue’s from appearing during the fading process. If you leave your make up for several years before returning to us, it is likely to need 2 treatments to “top it up” whereas done annually it will only require 1.
